“Ryu Hyun-jin is a crisis artist,” praised even if he didn’t last five innings

The Toronto Blue Jays’ “Korean Monster” Ryu Hyun-jin showed off his crisis-management skills in a no-hitter.

Hyun-jin Ryu pitched 4⅔ innings of scoreless baseball with six strikeouts and two walks against the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Monday (June 18).

Ryu did not allow a run despite having runners on second and third in the second inning, second and third in the third inning, and runners on first and third in the fourth inning. He was eventually removed with runners on second and third in the fifth inning, ending his season-long quest for a fourth win.

Toronto manager John Schneider praised Hyun-jin Ryu for getting out of several crises, saying, “He’s a pitcher who can make pitches in big moments,” and then explained his quick decision by saying, “We looked at his pitch count and what he had done in the previous innings.”

Local media praised Ryu’s crisis management skills. “Ryu has proven himself to be a master at getting out of trouble,” wrote the Toronto Star, while Yahoo Sports Canada’s Thomas Hall said, “Ryu has proven himself to be a ‘crisis artist’ through the first three innings.”

Keegan Madison, who covers Toronto for MLB.com, also praised Ryu’s crisis management skills, writing, “Ryu gave up a couple runs and had some help, but still pitched a solid game.”
